(List 8 for Student Council, List 3 for Academic Senate)
We are Gabi – the green-alternative-colourful initiative – and are
particularly committed to the following topics:
- Fair study financing and educational justice
- Queer feminism and anti-racism
- Inclusion and awareness
- Sustainability, climate justice and climate protection
- Animal rights and strengthening vegan options
- Support and coordination of student (political) engagement
Fair study financing and educational justice
We demand that all increases in the semester contribution are taken back and that the City of Bremen and the federal government bear the additional costs for Studierendenwerk and the public transport companies instead. In addition, the administration fee should be removed entirely. It is unacceptable that budget gaps are passed on to us students.
Unfortunately, the decision to start a study programme and its successful completion still heavily depend on social background. To address this, BAföG payouts must be significantly increased and made accessible to more students – full grants instead of loans, parent-independent and without complicated application procedures. The benefit rates should finally be adjusted regularly to our actual financial needs.
In addition, we will continue to campaign against rent increases and for more affordable housing.
Queer feminism and anti-racism
Unfortunately, we live in a patriarchal society that is characterised by structural racism and thus discriminates against FLINTA* and BIPoC people in particular. We can‘t and won’t accept this.
We are fighting for a discrimination-sensitive university that consistently dismantles structural discriminations. Specifically, we are campaigning for gender-just toilets, free menstrual products and more awareness on campus.
FLINTA*: Women, lesbians, inter, non-binary and agender people (non-exhaustive list)
BIPoC: Black, Indigenous and People of Colour
Inclusion and awareness
We also see a clear need for improvement on campus in terms of reducing barriers for students with chronic illnesses or disabilities and the compatibility of studying and care work – especially for students with children. We see hybrid teaching and lecture recordings as important building blocks for this. However, it is ultimately about taking the needs of the affected students seriously and responding to them individually.
Sustainability, climate justice and climate protection
We are committed to sustainable mobility on campus. Last year, we achieved the expansion of the semester ticket to cover the whole of Germany and the introduction of free minutes for bike sharing, among other things. We also want to set up a free cargo bike rental service on campus and at the student dorms.
Furthermore, we are organising regular clothing swaps on campus and the urban gardening project behind the SFG.
Animal rights and strengthening vegan options
We are calling for an end to animal testing at the University of Bremen. We will also continue to campaign for the expansion of vegan options in the mensas and to ensure that they remain affordable.
Support and coordination of student (political) engagement
We work hard to promote student interests and solidarity on campus. We always have an open ear. We are grateful for solidarity-based criticism and are happy to pass on our knowledge – for us, political work necessarily goes hand in hand with a collective learning process.
Unfortunately, it often takes a long time to bring about change at an institution as large as the university, but we are not discouraged and keep at it.
If you would like to support our political work, please vote for us in the university elections on 2-6 June. We are standing in 8th position on the ballot for the Student Council and in 3rd position on the ballot for the Academic Senate. If you are still undecided, feel free to get in touch with us directly. As usual, we will have a stand on the boulevard during the election week. So feel free to come by.
